Opening an excel file

By anoguch ·
I keep receiving an error message when I try to open an excel file. The message says the file is in use. It then lets me open the file as a read only file. However, the message of an illegal operation has occurred and shuts down the file.

Are you on a Novell network? What version of Excel are you using?

When this happens, the computer has some files remaining in the memory that indicate that the file is open. Usually you can't get rid of these files without closing Excel, and often, closing down Windows and re-starting the machine.

The reason trying to open the file as a read-only file bombs is because your machine is the machine that is also holding these indicators that the file is open and Excel can't have two files open with the same name.

Are you perhaps opening a file that resides on a drive to which you do not have write privileges, such as a network drive? Or, are you accessing a remote tree on a WAN that does not "trust" your tree?
