Opening .dat files

By gill ·
Can you tell me what program to use to open a .dat file, please? I need to check an index.dat file to see which Internet sites have been visited from a particular PC?

Opening .dat files

The simplest method is to use notepad. DAT files are typically text based, and can be viewed by most text viewers. If the file is very lage (several MB or more) then this can cause problems for your editor. In this case, from the command line use the following (including the word 'type') -

type "yourfile.dat" | more

this will echo the contents to the command window, pausing after each "page" of data.
