I have a user who was sent some items in a zip file. Some of those items had the 'windows' icon, and she couldn't open them. I told her that they aren't usable files, they can't be opened. They are system files of some sort. Please confirm exactly what those files with the 'windows' icon are. New Tech! Help!

Hi Klip,
there's approx five files, with various extensions:

htm
vsd
wmf
asa

also, one of the files is really peculiar in that a file conversion box opens up, and a particular language has to be used. I tried all, and it's still not readable.

An .ASA file is a Microsoft Visual InterDev file and a .VSD file is a Visio drawing (flow chart or schematic) file. You have to have these prgrams installed in the system to be able to view them

As per the .WMF file, is Windows Metafile which isthe the standard Windows format for storing vector and metafile graphics. The WMF format is considered to be a general format for graphic applications and is supported by all platforms. It is strange why you couldn't view the file unless it is currupted.

A .HTM file is Hypertext document. Unlike HTML documents which are ready for viewing in a web browser, an HTM file is not and must be assembled to be viewed. HTM files are found as template and report files.

vsd is a picture viewer, you need visio to view this file, unfortunately in does not come with windows.WMF, windows meta file, no prblems if you are using win2000, or Paint Shop Pro to open. For .asa file go to Microsoft site.. http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/en/server/iis/default.asp?url=/windows2000/en/server/iis/htm/asp/glob63vp.htm
and read about it. And for .htm, I never encounter this one. Opening any unknown file format, you could always go to Microsoft site for the files they support, you might be able to download program to open them.
