Opening excel document on share drive

By Catt1960 ·
I seem to be having a problem with opening any excel document on the share drive. The error message is cannot find specific file. But after you click ok on the error message and click that document again, it will open. If You drag it into a blank excel worksheet it will open, or if you open up excel first, the go to file, open to the share drive where the excel document is, it will open. This is like this on all the excel shortcuts on the share drive for this user. What could be the solution?

I don't know what version of Excel you are running, but you may want to check the following:

In Excel 97 it would be Tools -> Options -> General tab. Make sure that "Ignore other applications" is NOT checked.

Hope that helps.

This seems to be related to the Operating System that you are using. I can give you a few hints without knowing the OS, but it won't be the best answer:
With WINDOWS 2000 PRO, the fix is very simple, there is a way to set up a network drive as being under MY COMPUTER, as if its part of your computer. I think the equivalent for WIN9x would be to right click on the drive and set a drive letter, by using "MAP NETWORK DRIVE".
What this does is change the way that the files are accessed. Before, the sharing allows you to access files, but it can be blocked because of interference due to network traffic. When you set the drive so it appears under MY COMPUTER, it provides a direct link to the NETWORK ADDRESS of the computer, rather than using MY NETWORK PLACES to reroute the address.
It seems that network traffic is the cause of your problems when using MY NETWORK PLACES, which is how I am assuming that you are accessing the file.
I would be happy to further troubleshoot your problem with a little more information, if this is not helpful. Thank you.

If you do not shut this machine down regularly, you may try that. I have seen some machines with win95 that have had 30 or more files open and have to be closed when the machine is shut down, but there is no indication that these files are open until the machine is shut down.

Thanks.. but that is not the problem. The machine can be shut down and then brought back up. Go in through explorer on Winnt and click on any excel document on a share drive and it will give you the error message that it can not find the specified file. Then it will bring up an empty excel document. Then click it again and it will open. Or you can drag the excel shortcut in and it will open. Thanks alot though. Microsofts solution didn't help where you click and unclick in properties.. thatsolution is not working.

Try checking settings under "File Types". go to View - Folder Options.. and click on file types tab.

Go to Microsoft Excel Worksheet(or what ever type of document it is). Edit the open statement. does it look okay?

"C:\Program Files\MicrosoftOffice\Office\excel.exe" /e

DDE [open("%1")]

if it looks okay, and still isn't working, delete the entry for Microsoft Excel Worksheet. Then go out to share point, and all the work sheets should have a "blank windows document" look.. click on one, and the "Open With" dialog should pop up, choose Microsoft Excel, and make sure the "Always use this program to.." IS checked. If that doesn't work.. lastly, uninstall office on that PC, and reinstall..

Complete reimage if that still doesn't fix it..
Good LUCK!

Ya know I had to give the user administrative rights to install the office 2000 under the users name, then take that away, that solved this issue. But I would like to have known how to have resolved it otherwise. That was just a patch, it didn'tlocate the original problem. Your answer sounds really good. Too bad I didn't get the opportunity to try it. :)

In the end of your post you mention "for this user". Is this phenomenon only occuring on that user's files? If so, does that user have the same problem? If the answer to number 1 is yes and number 2 is no then I'd look at the settings on that user'smachine. It's possible they could unknowingly be linking the spreadsheets to something on their machine, like say, a template, macro or add-in. When you try to open the file, it goes and looks for the other file, and bammo, "File not Found".

Kinda sounds like a WAG, but what the heck, it's worth a look.

Good luck!

One more idea: possibly you still have traces of excel 97 lurking around, if you upgraded. Even if you uninstall first, you can still get some doubled associations from leftover '97 registry keys.
