OpenSuse 10.2 xorg.conf User file that supercedes settings of xorg.conf?

I am using openSuse 10.2 with an NVIDIA graphics card and hdtv monitor. Is there a user preferences file that supercedes the settings in xorg.conf? The screen settings when I sign on as root are vastly different then when I sign on as a user. I used sax2 from the command line to activate the graphics card after installing the drivers from yast and the NVIDIA download site.
