No Mac OS is not BSD based. Macintosh is a dirivative of the old Apple corporation that had it’s start in the 1970’s. Based on the Motorola 6800 chipset Apple computers were the predominat first computers and were found widely in schools as the apple IIe. When the PC era of the 8088 IBM-PC showed in 1980 Apple moved from 8bit technology to the 16bit M68000 technology and renamed themselves Macintosh.

Yes, since Mac OS X it has been based on BSD. Here’s a link; http://www.apple.com/macosx/architecture/
