Operating system not found

By bheartxl ·
I have a Toshiba Satellite which was pre-installed with Windows 98 as its default. I upgraded it to WIn XP Home Edition.
I turned it on the other day, and it made this tapping sound, then brought up the message: "Operating system not found". I entered the BIOS setup and it doesnt detect the hard disk. What can I do? Do I just have to re-install the OS? Or try using a boot disk? I am prepared to start using Windows 98 again. Please help.

Most likely hard disk failure. Will have to replace hard disk, reinstall OS, drivers, and applications. Data is lost unless you have a backup.

Drive not recognized by BIOS along with unusual noise indicates integrated (on disk) controller failure.

Sorry about the bad news.

The tapping sound means your disk probably doesn't spin up and is broken. Check with toshiba or the disk manufacturer if it is still in warranty. Disks often have warranties of 1 year, 3 years or 5 years. If so you can mail it to the manufacturer and they will send you a replacement (although, if it had w98 on it, it probably is older).

You may have a hard disk failure from your post, backup data before performing any other actions.

If you have a Windows 98 startup disk load into floppy drive, boot system, choose to boot computer without cd rom support, this will load the system files, after completes reboot
Hope this helps
