operating system not found

By roger ·
The maching was working fine, then it started to get very slow and i noticed the hard drive was full but i did not have a lot of programs on it.
The next time i rebooted i got the message "operating system not found", there is a hard drive and all it's connetions are on properly.

Start by booting the system with a virus boot disk and check system for any viruses

This virus scan may yield a virus,if so you will have to consider FDISK to start over with fresh install

Next,if available using a WIN 98 startup disk insert in floppy drive and boot computer, choose option to boot with out cdrom support, type fdisk /mbr and reboot, use the appropiate key,F8 or F10 to boot into safe mode use the sstem tools to run a system maintainence to clean the drive

Also use a spy ware scanner to check for spyware on the system which may be another culprit for loading files.

I would suggest trying a repair with the original cd's. It may prove useless, but it is worth a try. The virus check should be the first step, the slowdown and disk filling up sure sounds like it.

if you have need for the info on the drive, try slaving it, but be warned, if it is a virus, it may transfer to the other system. Determine how bad you need the info. Best bet is to rebuild as Dmiles stated.
