By Casemaker ·
Hi,
My client is receiving this error message after the computer is on for a while(1-2 hours) and it reboots. After it reboots the message operating system not found on any devices press any key appears. The system has run for as long as a day without shutting down and then on a manual reboot the message appears. I have tested the drive with spinrite and one sector at the front of the hdd was recovered. When I change the cmos battery right after the message appears it will boot test RAM amount give 1621 system options not set bios updated and 163 system time error and boot.

sounds awfullly similar to the disk failure error that I've seen with winxp pro and intel 815 chipset.

suggest trying newer version of winxp.

or completely rebuild the system, removing and rebuilding the drive partitions.

What type of mother board, hard drive and connection type? If you are using an older hard drive and a new mother board with the newer connections for hard drives you will get that type of error. The new hard drives read faster and some have the same type connectors as the older types. Read the manual for the mother board and make sure the cables and hardware meet the spec's. It looks like the bios is looking for any device to boot it can boot to. Also try to see what power supply is recomended for that type of mother board, it could be that the power supply is being over used. Or it is being over heated.

The MB is Quik Silver2-CMT and the HDD is WD 120GB Model WD120BB Ultra ATA 100. The HDD is connecting with a 40 pin 80 conductor IDE cable. the jumper was set to CS and I have since set it to single, per WD website. I am waiting to see if the error still shows up

Sounds like a heat realated problem with the on-board harddrive controller card (gets hot and a connection opens up). How old is the system and when was the last time the dust was removed from within the case ? 12+ Monthes = through cleaning, depending on the environment.

I let it run overnight and it rebooted with the error. I let it sit for an hour and tried a reboot and got the same error. I let it sit off through Sat and Sunday and when I reboot today I get Configuration automaticaaly updated and it finds athe HDD and Cd then boots right into xp. This has happened every time I wait to reboot. I ? the cmos battery or chip, however, the clock and date and day are all ok. I also lost the video capability when I went to reboot last week.
