    Hi,
I wanted to know. I want to get into the networking part of computers. What job titles are out there as far as career opportunities. Could anyone recommend any websites that I could check out what avenues are out there i.e. Lan admin, network security. Also, what are the more lucrative careers in IT networking. To give you my background, I am a technical support analyst for a proprietary software company specializing in IVR Technology. I also am going to school for networking and will be taking classes for Microsoft 2000 Netware 5x cisco routers and unix. What is available for me????? Thanks, Gil

Getting into networking field can be a long process and networking in job fairs.looking at http://www.dice.com,Americas’s Job Bank,www.hotjobs.com,www.monster.com,www.jobswww.careerbuilders,are just a few, check the web pages. The lucrative careers are individuals with on the job expierence.Their is a lot of hype around this field and you will have to get started in other areas of networking and move up,two years of expierence will supplement any training that you may have.Training will be helpful, yet potential employers will take expierence over training,so donot think the training will be a salary bargaining tool.Job boards are a good bet also, and good luck.

The fastest way to get trained for a competent person is to work the computer services reseller or a computer reseller level. Large companies like Cisco, 3Com , HP,IBM,Apple, Compaq, and Microsoft offer excellant training to the companies that resell their products. There are many courses that are free or for a minamal investvent. If I was younger I would be a Cisco engineer. There are more brain surgeons in the world than top level Cisco engineers. Design is a very important field these days. You can attain accreditations as you go and it easy to learn while you are bringing in some income.

Hello AUXPERC- you ask this so long ago that I am sorry it was not answered to your satisfaction. I will be happy to offer advise. I am a professor for a community college in the networking field as well as an instructor for a Fortune 100 company. Your question is a good question and I frequently hear this from my students.I will explain to you as I do to them. First the networking industry is wide open. Occupations as you rightly pointed out from Admin to network security exist. With that wide diversity you can be employed at anything you get skilled at. So what is it you enjoy? Your are working for a software programming company , do you enjoy this? Programming is an admirable profession.
By now you should have taken some of these courses you listed. Of those my favorite is the Cisco curriculum but that is my desire. Which did you enjoyed? Of those careers you mentioned the most in-demand is Cisco followed by UNIX skilled administrator then Microsoft and Novell. I am certified and teach in all of them and I recommend that you also set a goal for certification as well as for minimal costs take a community college course on the subjects. In addition many community colleges have a class for on-the-job training skills that you can take for college credit and experience. Wages sometimes help make a decision keep in mind that skill level will dictate the wage level. In the SouthWest (add cost of living in your area) Network Admin wages are low $35,000 to $50,000 ( that would go for Microsoft, Novell, with Unix at the higher end). WAN TECHs- usually $50,000 to $60,000 (Cisco 2 years of experience).
