Optimum config of XP pcs/ NT4.0 domain

Can anyone outline the best way to achieve a usable desktop configuration on XP Prof in an NT 4.0 domain. In order to ensure that :-
1. any user is able to log in, even via RAS,
2. that their default file location will point to the relevant network area,
3. Microsoft Office (2000) options are retained for all users,
(We do not use NT profiles at present and don’t intend moving to Active Directory for at least 18 months.)
