Options/solutions to recover corrupted WinXP Home registry

By lehmang ·
Tried to repair my OS from 3 yr old Service CD.
Why, it had weird happenings - like errors after closing Control Panel, could not make clean backup from regedit, performance getting very sluggish. Decided OS "repair" would be safe. First time it worked but removed SP2. Attempts to reload SP2 kept getting "access is denied" errors. After 5 iterations with a new Key failing each time, decided to open full permissions to all HKCR keys. Now it's hosed. WinXP won't start and gets itself in endless loop when attempting to begin a new repair.

What have I done - and can it be corrected?

ive never been able to successfully 'repair' a copy of windows home. Never tried to do it when just experiencing small errors only when windows wont boot. Go w/ xp.
