Oracle 8.1.7 on Dell 2400 w/ RAID WinNT4

By Chas4 ·
We are trying to install Oracle 8.1.7 on a Dell 2400/733 w/36GB RAID. The OS is WinNT4 w/SP6a. The install goes fine, but when we restart, the Oracle services won't start. The event log says that access was denied. How can this be if the Oracle services are running as system services?

You didn't really say what was denied access to what, but let's take a stab.
First, if the services are configured to start using the System account, should they interface with the desktop or not? If they need to be set to use another account, makesure the username and password are correct. Then check to make sure that account is in the correct groups (probably the Administrators group for one).
Second, if access was denied to some key in the registry, check the security settings inside the registry --use regedt32.exe as regedit.exe does not have the security extensions available. (Be very careful when editing the registry!!)
Third, check file permissions on all files associated with the services.
Lastly, if you installed Oracle with antivirus software running, it may have interfered with the install process, so you may need to uninstall Oracle, re-boot, shut off the antivirus, and re-install Oracle.

I just thought of another potential area of conflict. If you have Microsoft SQL Server already installed on the machine, it does not play well with competition and will cause problems with Oracle software. Whether the two databases can run side-by-side on the same box is anyone's guess. Theoretically it is possible, but it will take a large amount of tweaking.

I faced a similar type of situation.we were using a mylex RAID controller with three 18gb HDD configured with RAID 5.The problem was after RAID configuration it was showing in the mylex bios as 36gb but one of the HDD had not been initialized.NT wasgetting installed and when we tried to install ORACLE 8I OR 8.1.5 it was giving Dr Watson error and when we uninstalled it and tried to re-install again it got installed but the services was not getting started. We contacted the MYLEX PEOPLE they suggested us to re-initialize the RAID HDD'S,so that one HDD which was troublesome got should get initialized. It worked and we formatted the HDD again and installed NT and Oracle server it worked fine. Our system had 2 pentium III 933,three 18gd HDD and 512 MB RAM.
