Oracle Applications Distributed Database

By pepsundar ·
We have a Corporate Office and 8 Branches having separate LAN in each place with independant hardware (Servers & Desktop). We have implemented WAN and connected all the branches through dial up lines since leased lines/ISDNs are not available with the Service Providers. We are implementing Oracle Apps (Financials & Distribution) modules. In the Corp Off we have RS/6K (Model H50) running AIX - Database Server and an NT Server being used as Forms Server. In Branches we have IBM Netfinity Servers running NT. Becoz of a low bandwidth (14.4kbps) Branch users are unable to work on Oracle Apps installed in H50, at the Corp Off. We are looking for some technical tips/guidelines to deploy Oracle Apps installation at Branch Servers and update the data to the central H50 as a end of the day processing. Any help would highly be appreciated. Thanks.

Your equipment architecture and communications capability are the short straws in your case. Whoever made the decision to pruchase the Oracle applications should have considered the capabilities of he system. If it wasn't you, expose him/her and start over with the right mix.
A project definition would be a good place to start and let the requirements drive specifications and then a request for proposal. But if you are in a traditional organization no one wants to spend the time to do it right.

You are right Gene. It wasn't me who decided and the person who decided to go for an ERP solution, is no more!!!

I'm looking for technical tips which will help me to have distributed instances and replication of data to the central server - whichseems to be the only alternative since none of the branch exchanges (service providers) are equipped for leased lines or ISDNs.

Do you have programmers and web servers available?

If you can identify a short set of standard tasks/functions performed at the branches you can build custom interfaces to send data and invoke concurrent programs or custom PL/SQL on the corporateinstallation.

For example, you might want to start with a reporting function. You can create a web-based interface that will allow login to the Oracle Application, selection of a report to request, and a menu of reports that have been produced.Start with a simple function to develop the interface architecture. Then you will have something to build on.

Standard tools provided by Oracle for loading legacy data during implementation can be used to load data from the branches.

Hope this helps.
