Oracle under UNIX vs. Windows

By highlander718 ·
I heard that Oracle under UNIX is better than Oracle under Windows. Why ?
I'm talking about DB applications, I'm working on a project that involves huge databases and it looks that Access is not enough anymore and I'm thinking to use Oracle but I want to make sure that there is a reason to start with UNIX to.

Thanks

Oracle under UNIX vs. Windows

by Some Guy in Seattle In reply to Oracle under UNIX vs. Win ...

Generally, UNIX is more stable under higher network loads for *any* application. The tradeoff is that UNIX has a much higher learning curve and is not all that intuitive. If you are running Microsoft OSes right now, you also have to look at administering a mixed OS environment.

If you are set on getting Oracle, I would recommend talking to an Oracle engineer for advice, give the specs of your network, projected network growth, and intended uses/load expected to be used by the Oracle machine.

Hope that helps,
