OS Misidentified as NT while running Win

When I try to install certain software such as Adobe Photoshop 6 or Instant Messenger my operating is misidentified as Windows NT by the setup program. There also an error message frequently generated that states that CTL3D32.DLL is the wrong version and used only with Windows NT. How do I correct this?
