Well, take the case off and make sure that all the cables and power leads are properly seated/connected.

Make sure the disk is being recognised in the BIOS and that the correct disk is being booted from.

If you still have problems do a repair installation of XP.

Good luck

Just an addendum here if everything is correctly connected download the Drive makers Testing Utility and test the HDD before attempting to do a Repair Install. If the HDD is dead or on its way out you don't want to be wasting your time by doing a Repair Install of XP on a faulty HDD.

You could also download The Ultimate Boot CD and boot from that to test the other Hardware. It's available at:-

the exact error message is important.
i would enter BIOS right away and see what it thought it was detecting for hard drives. while i was in there i would check the version of the bios and check to see what else was interesting, say maybe bios level anti-virus checking...
if the bios finds the hard drive, and reports it's size correctly then something happened to probably the boot record on the disk. maybe a virus? or did this crop up after an upgrade?
if the bios see's the drive but it can't boot, then i'd boot with the windows xp cd in there and try using the recovery console to run chkdsk /f maybe defrag and see if there are any file system or disk errors...then i'd try a Windows Repair.
consider updating the computers bios to the latest greatest
if the hard drive is not being detected then we need more. ide, scsi, sata? model number?
