OS not found/Invalid system disk

By Casemaker ·
Situation:Client They have 12 computers running W98 networked to the instructor computer. Use removable HDD cases in all systems with floppy and DVD drives.
PROBLEM: Cust uses Disk Image to ghost these drives regularly, procedure is to clean out files and junk that the students may have created on one HDD and then ghost the remaining. Has done this with no problem since buying Disk image. On Thursday when she booted up one of the systems she received an error message ?operating system not found?. She then cleaned out one of the other systems and was going to ghost it to the system that had the error message. When she did this she received and error message ? the fat files are not identical and if she wanted to continue press cancel? she pressed cancel put the drives back in. The two machines produced error messages invalid system disk replace and press any key and operating system not found she tried it on another system with the same results.
DIAGNOSTICS: Tried booting with boot disk and tried fdisk and received error message no fixes disks found.it would not let me format the drive. From the dos prompt I found the c: drive and did dir but found no files. On one disk it had a fat 12-file system and 2 partitions when there should only be 1. The only way I could repartition and format the drive was to remove it from from the removable HDD tray and then it would find the disk and let me format and reload windows. When I finished and tried to put it back in the tray it saidno operating system found. I have swapped the HDD tray with several known good ones to no avail. I had to follow this procedure with all four and run them without the HDD trays. During windows install I received a message about the drive being compressed as well as not having enough disk space. I would hit escape and the install would be successful. I cannot get them to boot inside the HDD case only outside.

The CD ROM would not be found using the boot disk it would be recognized after taking it out of the HDD removable case.

I had a double listing in DM. I have not done a scan for viruses. If it is a virus, why would it let me fdisk and format the HDD after removing it from the removable HDD tray and not when it was in it. It would fdisk and format once I connected directly with the IDE cable on PRI 1.

Serious problems here no doubt...

Have you checked system BIOS on these systems to determine if irregularities exist between these systems and working ones?

You should virus scan Immediately too, and...some viruses can definately affect a flashable bios.

also, check your Image file for virus too,

Good luck with this...

OS not found/Invalid system disk

Well sounds like the electroics or the cables within the removable case or the bay that it sits in have gone (i know you said the tray doesn't seem like the problem) but it might still be the bay that sits inside the computer), just buy a new one and try it then...

The reason i say this is because you said the HDD would work inside the computer but not in the bay, therefore making something wrong with the bay.

Hope you have success,
David

Just thought 5 second after I clicked post... try a new IDE cable to the bay... now before you reject the idea, when you used it with the HDD actually inside the computer you may have jiggled it around enough to work but in the position that the baysits in it may have a connection problem....

but for the HDD to be seen but have errors like that it seems that some pins may be connecting but not all.

Good luck again.
