OS thinks DVD drive is a CD drive

By tuns99 ·
I have an older PC running WinME with separate CD-RW and DVD drives. Everything worked fine until I installed a trial version of Pinnacle CD/DVD software. Since then my DVD drive is no longer recognized as a DVD. I uninstalled the Pinnacle software but the OS still thinks it is a CD and I can't get it to set it up as a DVD drive.

Sounds as if the trial version has a few bugs. What has happened here is a Registry error has cropped up so the easiest way to to scan the registry and fix any incorrect entries.

For a trial version of software that works try Iolo's System mechanic it's a fully functioning 30 day trial period and do not download the Pro version as its only difference to the standard version is it has an AV product installed.

It's available at

Thanks! I edited the registry and took out anything that mentioned pinnacle (after I backed it up first of course). Rebooted and my DVD drive is back just as before.

well I have the same issue[though its not really an issue] in XP but the BIOS sees it as a DVD and the O/S actually sees it as a DVD [device manager] but when you look at My Computer, the device is seen as a CD because the last disc I put in it was a CD.

There really isn't any setting up a device like a CD as one. What would really be the issue is if whatever application [like Pinnacle or Nero or Roxio] your using doesn't recognize the DVD as a DVD. I have an NEC 2500A DVD and Roxio refuses to see it as a DVD. However Nero does. So, Roxio is out and Nero is in.

if all the applications you are trying to use see the drive as a CD-R, you might want to get the latest drivers or consider a firmware update from the DVD mfg.
