OS2 File Sharing with NT

By geraldtomerlin ·
How do I get an OS2 machine to play nice and share its files with my NT4 LAN. I know very little about OS2.

You're not going to like this. The only way I know of is to build an NT 3.51 server, place it on the LAN, and configure it to be a gateway to the OS/2 server. All OS/2 support dried up with NT4. There is probably an easier way if your OS/2 machine is not configured with HPFS, but I stopped playing with OS/2 in 1997.

We are sharing files everyday in a NT4 LAN. The OS2 server is not part of the NT4 domain but the users have the same account name and password in both domains. The have access to the OS2 files and NT4 files. It can be done without a NT 3.51 server

I think you'll find your answer here:

http://www.32bitsonline.com/article.php3?file=issues/199809/netbios&page=1

This gentleman knows just about everything there is to know about OS/2 networking. I have OS/2, Win98 and NT 4 boxes chatting happily using this information. To summarize, and hopefully earn my points:

- Make sure you have NETBIOS over TCPIP installed in MPTS, not just plain TCP/IP. If you use NETBEUI on your NT domain, install IBM NETBIOS instead.
- Make sure you have a "wrknets=NET1" line in your IBMLAN.INI. If you have protocols other than TCPBEUI installed, you may also have a NET2, NET3 etc.
- Make sure "DOMAINS=" in IBMLAN.INI matches your NT domain name. If you must browse other domains, add a line "othdomains=example1,example2"
- If you still can't see the domain controller, it's probably because of the non-compliant quasiDNS on your NT system. Edit the \IBMCOM\RFCNAMES.LST and add server names with their IPs:

"WIMPY" 9.55.3.10

"SHADY" 120.33.5.5

When you're done, run RFCADDR. You don't have to reboot then.
Good luck!
