OSI module

You might think it would be in the Application layer, but the term Application in the OSI model is not the same as a word processing "application". The OSI model explains how data is transmitted over a network. The only things that Word does that relate to the OSI model would be to open a file on a network share, or print to a network printer. However, Word requests these functions from the network redirector, which is most likely a part of your operating system.

Simply put, Word is not located anywhere in the OSI model. When you go to print to a network printer or open a file on a network in Word, Word turns this over to the operating system. The network redirector function of the OS then begins the process of data transmission as itapplies in the OSI model.

This is not so much an answer as a comment on NetTek's answer: good answer and well stated!

As an extra example when looking at where something may be classed in the OSI model, think of it this way: If the object of your enquiry (hardware, software) can work on a PC that has no networking ability then most likely it is not applicable on the OSI model.

Hope that helps -
