osX consistantly locking after ~10 minutes use requiring reboot

So I grabbed the last osX update (not the latest version release) and ever since, this Macbook Pro constantly locks up or posts that nasty black “need to reboot” error message after 10 minutes or less of doing anything.

Is this a ram issue? has the new update upped the ram needs of the system? Am I running into a memory limitation that forces the crash?

Is this a storage issue? There’s three gig free on the drive and it doesn’t seem to get used up before crash but anything is possible.

I’ve been on Windows machines since they where Dos with a nock-off mac GUI (er.. win3.0). I’ve been loving posix for years now (in the for of Linux mostly) so I’m comfy with osX as soon as I get that terminal up. This has me stumped though and in either of the two other platforms, I’d probably know three or more options for the cause before touching the machine.

More details can be provided.

Any ideas from the more osX knowledgeable would be greatly appreciated. If I can’t figure this out then it’ll be time to scrub and rebuild provided I can somehow backup all the data on the drive in between crashes. (hm.. I think I have a *nix boot CD here somewhere that supports osX partitions).
