"Out of Frequency" - monitor shuts off

By pbtoms ·
One of my users has had this problem twice this week. The monitor goes blank, and a box comes up that says "Out of frequency range". It lists the frequencies (She rebooted this last time, I don't know what the numbers were). It's a Dell system, don't know the exact specs off hand, but it is the monitor that came with the system. Any ideas?

"Out of Frequency" - monitor shuts off

by shiny_topadm In reply to "Out of Frequency" - moni ...

Hi, I've actually seen this exact symptom!

1) check the connector that's on the end of the monitor cable, that it's securely plugged into the video card. Use The Screws!! If it becomes (even momentarily) disconnected, the monitor tries to adjustitself to a sync frequency of 0 Hz (!), which is out of range!

2) make sure video card is seated correctly in the socket (assuming that this model has a discrete AGP or PCI vid. card)

3) possible bad video card, check by subbing.

4) possible internal monitor problem, once again, substitute if possible

5) verify that no BIOS power-saver type tricks have been enabled. These sometimes conflict with Windows parameters...depends on hardware/software specs

6) if it's a really old computer, check for excessive dust, etc. on vid. connector and card slots

Hope these helped ---Will

Also check display properties (Advanced) for the monitor refresh rate, and try setting it lower. However, if it appears to do it just randomly (and intermittently) as it sounds like, your best bet is some sort of connection problem.
