Outlook 2000 slow connection to Exchange

by jmar17 . Updated 25 years, 5 months ago

We are running a Novell 5.1 network with an Exchange 5.5 server for email. Our workstations are Windows 95 and 98. We use Outlook 2000 as the email client.
The problem we are having seems to have started last week and only for some PCs. About 10 of 40 users are experiencing this problem. The users have difficulty first in making a connection to the Exchange server when they open Outlook. It usually gives them an error message that says, “Your Microsoft Exchange server is unavailable”. If they click on Retry, they are able to connect to the server and get their email. But then accessing or moving from email to email or folder to folder is very slow.
Here are some things I’ve tried:
-Logged in as an administrator and opened an administrator’s mailbox; still problems (opening Outlook on an unaffected PC with the same mailbox is fine)
-Reinstalled Outlook
-Size of some of the affected mailboxes are small and some are large; so size doesn’t seem to be cause
-No other problems connecting to other network resources; pinging the Exchange server is quick

Any other ideas as to what may be causing these problems all of a sudden? Thanks in advance for any help.

Jeff
