Outlook 2003 Jpeg attachemts Close suddenly

On a XP Pro SP2 Machine in Outlook 2003 when i try to open a jpeg attachment it opens for a few seconds then closes suddenly. This only happens when i open it as a attachment if i save the file to the desktop there is no problem. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causeing this?
