I finally found the answer to my own question on this in the Microsoft KB. under Article ID Q197483.
The problem in a nutshell is that the days in the Calendar preview show as boldface items and there is no appointment showing up in the daily detail for those days.
The cause has to do with deleting a Calendar folder and Outlook creating a new folder. The new folder has the free/busy information from the old folder although it does not have the appointment particulars.
The solution isto run a command line start of Outlook, from Start/Run and using this command: outlook /cleanfreebusy
There is a space after the word outlook, in front of the front slash, but no other spaces.
This fixed my problem.
