Outlook 2k3/relaying
I have noticed a problem that only seems to be a problem in Outlook 2003. That is bounced messages due to restrictions against "relaying". My setup is this: I have a small LAN with a Linux box set up as a firewall. The Linux box is also running sendmail, procmail and fetchmail. I point to my internal linux box as my outgoing/incoming mail server in Outlook.
I also use the linux box as an internal "relay" agent, so to speak. When I send an email, it is sent to my linux box, which in turn sends it to my isp's smtp server. Well, ever since upgrading to Outlook 2K3, Ive been getting these messages:
"Reporting-MTA: dns; server.internal_domain.com
Arrival-Date: Fri, 26 Mar 2004 07:09:34 -0700
Final-Recipient: RFC822; brian@web-host.net
Action: failed
Status: 5.1.1
Remote-MTA: DNS; smtp.west.cox.net
Diagnostic-Code: SMTP; 550 relaying mail to internal_domanin.net is not allowed
Last-Attempt-Date: Fri, 26 Mar 2004 07:09:34 -0700"
So, the chain of events is this: I send an email from my workstation, no errors are immediately returned. A few minutes later I get the message above, and the email never gets delivered. But it doesn't get returned either. It just "disappears".
The problem appears to go away if I use my assigned email address from my isp instead of my own registered domain-name email address in my Outlook setup.
If anybody is familiar with this issue, your help would be appreciated.
