Outlook client dialling every 2 minutes

By araine ·
I have a remote Win XP PC running Outlook 2002 using dial up ISDN over a WAN to connect to Head Office, where there are 2 domain controllers and an Exchange 5.5 server.
If I leave the PC on at Ctrl Alt Del prompt the line drops after 60 seconds of inactivity, as per router config.
If, however, I go into Outlook 2002 then do nothing the line again drops after 60 seconds of inactivity BUT comes up again every 2 minutes!
I am currently testing to see if the other 2 remote PCs at the same site (running Office 2000) cause the same problem, but I don't believe that's the case.
Any clues?

go into your settings in 2002 and check to see if it is set to a dialing cycle. If you have the automatically dial in when checking for new messages box highlighted it could be what is causeing the dialing issue. for example:

you have your 2002configured to hangup after checking for new messages so it does.
You also have it configured to dial when checking for new messages so it does.
Now it is in a 2 minute loop of dialing and hanging up so it will not ever stop.
I would suggest if this is the case taking the hangup after reading sending or receiving check out of your setup.

just a thought

Check your network/internet settings.

I have mine set to "Never dial a connection"

the default was "Dial whenever a network conenction is not present"

Have you check your dialup connection configuration? On the option tab, there is a redial options section. It list the number of redail attempsts, time between redial attempst, and idle time before hanging up.

I should have said that the 3 PCs are connected via a hub to a router which establishes the network connection via ISDN. Outlook's options for Send/Receive schedules are not ticked. Hangup after a manual Send/Receive is ticked but this shouldn't make a difference?
I cannot find an option for 'Dial whenever a network connection is not present' - I presume this is because the PCs don't use DUN to connect to the Servers? They connect via TCP/IP the same as local PCs on the LAN.
