Outlook corrupting attachments

By nocahoma ·
I have been encountering a rather unusual problem wit Outlook 2000. I have noticed that often times, when I send an attachment, say "resume.doc", it is sent just fine. However, when it is recieved by the recipient, it has been changed, and is now "winmail.dat". This file is obviously not readable, and is not even the same filename. Outlook has done this on several instances, with several different files. Anyone know what could be the cause of this?

I would suspect a MIME config error, but I need more info to be sure. Are you connecting via an Exchange server or just an Internet account (POP or IMAP)?

If its Exchange check your MIME settings on your IMS. We've had good luck choosing Plain Text for MIME and Western European for the character set.

If its Outlook w/ an Internet e-mail account click on Tools -> Options -> Internet e-mail. Check what your settings are for attachments there. The most common way that usually works in most cases is to use MIME, not UUENCODE, with no encoding. If this doesn't work play w/ the settings a bit.

Sometimes the email client on the recipient end may just be a screwball client that doesn't handle attachments very well or wants them in one particular setup, so your pretty much SOL on those.

The presence of Winmail.dat indicates that you sent the message using rich-text format (RTF) to someone who doesn't have Outlook and, therefore, can't receive RTF format. The solution is to send in plain text or HTML format.
