By sharon-a ·
I do freelance graphics from home. 2 days ago, outlook started crashing as soon as I did attach file. These are small illustrator files. It immediately crashes as soon as the file is selected. I tested other formats and the same thing occurs...HELP!

Check that the file associations with Illustrator are correct (see Explorer, Folder Options, File Types).

Are you getting any error messages when Outlook shuts down or have you checked your event logs for error messages?

Check Event Viewer

by gtrussler In reply to

Check the event viewer for failing drives/cables. If attachments are located on IDE/SATA drive the the CD/DVD drive is still polled. Failig/dislodged cable on CD/DVD will cause a hang.

What version of outlook are you running?

I had the same problem when using office 2007. I went on the office website and downloaded the updates for it and no longer have the trouble.

Windows Explorer

I too have seen this issue with Outlook 2010 on a Windows 7 platform. The crash happens when you open the attachment window and any network shares you may have mapped try to show up in the left window pane. If I unmap all drives, the error doesn't occur consistantly. It can be repeated with Word and Excel also.
