Symptoms include Offline message in the Status area and prompts to enter a password. The disconnect appears to happen randomly. Sometimes it will reconnect without user action after a few seconds to several minutes. Other times it is necessary to restart Outlook alone, or close Communicator first and then restart Outlook.
The problem occurs on both 2007 and 2010 clients. It doesnt matter if Outlook is closed at the end of the day or left running overnight. The problem occurs regardless of the presence of a .PST or .OST file. It occurs on both desktops and laptops, and two different operating systems (XP and W7). No other network applications are affected; Internet connectivity, connections to server-based apps, files, and printers remain functional.
