Outlook Express 5 Corrupt mailboxes

By sean ·
Some of our users are experiencing their e-mail disappearing from mailboxes, including the inbox. I can open the mailbox in a text editor and see the messages in the file but Outlook Express 5 does not show them. I now think the files are corrupt but how do you fix them so we can retrieve the messages? I've tried the "Inbox repair tool" for Outlook with no luck.

Outlook Express 5 Corrupt mailboxes

Chances are the Outlook Express Identities in the Registry has been corrupted. You'll will need, to resolve this problem, to go into the Registry Editor and export the identity, delete it from Outlook Express, and then import the OE Identity's one at a time to determine which one causes the failure. If you have used Outlook Express and you want to keep your address book and emails you will need to export the identity, delete it and then reload the identity.

If the program was never used or the problem appeared after an upgrade then just delete the identity and Outlook should begin to work again. Then you can recreate the id (new identity) from within Outlook Express.

Exporting the Identity(ies)

Click ?Start?, and then ?Run?.
In the Open box, type ?regedit? and click OK.
Locate the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\Identity ID Number

There is a key for each identity: i.e. {349c0979a720-B897-942b-c874d-01C0pf5abd12}
Follow these steps and repeat them for every identity.

On the left pane side, click the first \Identities\Identity ID Number key to highlight it (in the tree like structure), and in the right pane side, verify the user name that appears: i.e. Sean and note it down (unless there is only one).

Click on the ?Registry? menu in the top left corner of the windows and select ?Export Registry File? option. In the File name box, type in the name that appeared in the first identity (i.e. Sean). In the ?Save in? box, select?Desktop?, and click on ?Save?.

Don?t forget to do this for every identity, to export every one of them!)

Due to the fact this is a long procedure to write, see my second responce to complete this (Importing the identity)

This is not a problem with Outlook Express 5 opening. There is only one identity. The problem is the "inbox" file has data in it that Outlook Express can not retrieve. Again, I can see the data with a text editor. However, Outlook Express does not show the data. I need to be able to retrieve this data. ***Sean

When you have done the export(s), still while being in the registry editor, highlight the Identity ID Number key in the left side pane, and press the ?Delete? key on your keyboard. At the confirmation prompt, click on ?Yes?.
Exit the Registry?
The (Username).reg file(s) are now located on your desktop. Each file corresponds to one of/or the identities.

Importing the Identitie(s)

You will need to ?Import? each (Username).reg file but you will have to do this one-by-one. You will also need to start your Outlook Express after each import, this will determine which of the individual identity is damaged. To do this: On your desktop, double-click the/or on of the (Username).reg file that you exported. When prompted to confirm the add to the Registry, click on ?Yes?. After this is done, start your Outlook Express.

If the program works, repeat this with all identity until Outlook Express fails to open. At that point go back into the registry (regedit) and delete the Identity that caused the problem and just recreate that Identity from Outlook Express.
