I don't believe there is a size limit in Outlook Express. I know it can go up to more than 100MB because I have users that are over this limit.

The "limit" is determined by available resources.

OE opens the compressed dbx files that hold the saved messages.

So, the practicle limit, (before the system locks up) will be near the total free RAM and Swap file space.

I can tell you thatthe more mails you have, the slower OE opens.
I usually clean out my files at around 300 total mails, as it just takes to long to open.

In order to open OE with 1GB of mails, you would need to max out ram (511MB for W9.
And have at least 2GB of free space for the swap / pageing / virtual memory file.

There is no message limit in Outlook Express (although there is in Outlook). The limitation comes with the format of the drive. FAT16 drives can have a maximum file size of 2GB. FAT32 can have a maximum file size of 4GB. Even though these are maximum sizes, if your storage files are getting to this size Outlook Express will probably be having some problems managing the file. If OE is running slow then archive some of the messages out and/or compress your mail folder files.

Here's a couple oflinks regarding disk formats and file size limitations:

I have seen it go up to 3 gigs with about 4 years worth of data from work.
