Outlook Express - Again

By rascott757 ·
I'm having more problems with Outlook Express. Lately I have been unable to download my mail. I am with Verizon Online, and they prefer that we use Netscape, but I don't want to.. Anyway, it started just before the holiday weekend. I started to get doubles and triples of each message. Now whenever I open it, after maybe a minute I get an illegal operation error and it shuts down. So far I have been using Netscape to get at my mail, but is there a surefire way to uninstall and Outlook Express, wipe out the registry entries so that I can reinstall?
Thanks in advance for your input.

Uninstall OE and Internet Explorer. Search the registry for any reference to OE (I would search on the word "Outlook"), and delete them. Be sure to make a note of the keys, their values & locations if you are not sure what you are deleting, so you can recreate them if needed. Then reboot, run REGCLEAN until it stops finding errors, and reinstall. Hope this helps.

You may want to try this solution. The behavior can occur if the attributes of any or all of the Outlook Express *.dbx mail files are set to read only.

To correct this, you have to remove the read-only attribute from the Outlook Express *.dbx mail files:

1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click "Files or Folders".

2. In the Named box, type "*.dbx" (without the quotation marks), in the "Look in" box, click "Local hard drives (C:)", and then click Find Now.

3. For each *.dbx file that is found, right-click the file, click Properties, and then clear the Read-only check box.

4. Click Apply, and then click Close.

The *.dbx files should only have the Archive check box selected.

Hope this works!

I have actually run into this problem before with my ISP. Part of the problem was theirs but they also told me that if I had the option checked to leave messages on server than this kind of thing can happened if the messages never get deleted from the deleted folder. When I have had to uninstall Outlook Express before I just went through the Add/Remove Programs and did it from there. You might want to also think about upgrading to version IIE 5.5 before uninstalling. I had been having some flaky things happening with 5.0 so I upgraded and it took care of the problem.

Good Luck!
