To compact and back up mail folders
Select a mail folder, click the File menu, point to Folder, and then click Compact.

To back up the folder, find the folder file, and then copy it to a backup folder, floppy disk, or network drive. Outlook Express mail folders have a .dbx extension (for example, "Sent Items.dbx").

How to fix it? 1st try to do backup or simply copy your *.dbx file and then reinstall MS Outlook Express.

Copy the entire folder ataht contains the .mbx files to another folder
1)Quit Outlook Express
2)Create a new folder to store the idx, .mbx, and Folders.nch files in EX:C:\Backup
Review your mail messages folders
Click the File menu, select Folder>Compact All Folders
Find the files with the extension .mbx on your computer
Files usually located in a folder under \Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Mail
Copy the files to the backup folder
Copy the files to backup folder on computer,a floppy disk,or a network drive
Note:Each message folder has on message file (*.mbx) and one index file (*.idx).There is no need to copy the *.idx files. Some message files might be to large to backup onto a floppy disk.
