Outlook Express compacted my e-mails

By slylett ·
Mircosoft Express 6 compacted my e-mails and I can't seem to find them. I check pst. There are a ton of them. How do I know which one to look at? Need help ASAP.

OK, I found the files they are in dbx. How do I retrieve them and put them back in e-mail?

Did OE just compact or did it clean up your emails?

If OE did a clean up, the missing messages are gone.

Compacting messages is similar to disk compression or ZIP files. You should not loose any messages, they should just take up less hard drive space.

As to your .dbx files, there should be 1 DBX file for each folder you have in OE. Plus 1 extra file.

If you have .dbx files that are in your profile, but do not show up in the OE folder pane, then you should be able to use the Import tool to get the messages back.

If you have all of the folders showing, OE might have had an error while compacting, and lost messages.

Check the size of your .dbx files. An empty OE folder is around 60KB in size.
A folder with 5000 text messages will be around 60 MB.

There is a lot of good information about OE and links to message back up software at:

It said OK compacted them. I can see the dbx files, but how do I open them?
