outlook is retrieving data from exchange server....

by selinathe1 In reply to outlook is retrieving dat ...

<servername>my users started getting this pop-up message box in outlook 2003: "oulook is retrieving data from Microsoft exchange server ". and i've been going around to see where the problem was. and i found this link at MS site: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839862/en-us
and apparently, if the server name is fqdn, outlook is retreiving data froma global catalog server. here, there's 2 global catalog servers, one of them is this exchange server. i didn't read this part carefully enough and i ignored checking the other global catalog server. when i realized it, voila! the %processor time counter was constantly too high on this other global catalog server. this server run sql here, and sqlservr.exe seems to trigger high cpu usage on this server. now that i know where the problem is caused, i feel i'm 1 step ahead. =)</servername>

never-ending project

by selinathe1 In reply to outlook is retrieving dat ...

the project of upgrading servers to w2k3 at one of our clients office. it was supposed to be as easy as convert all servers to virtual and upgrade those servers to w2k3 and done.
well, it didn't work that way. first, as we knew that those servers were problems but what we didn't know was how screwed up they were, so screwed up that when the PDC died, we couldn't restore it. and in the case like this, there's supposed to be a BDC. but in this office, BDC practically died a long before PDC did. so we needed to created a brand new DC based on exchanger (2000) server which was supposedly replicated with the PDC before it died.
we transfer the FSMO, RID and all to make this brand new DC into PDC. it seems to be successful. we were witnessing DNS problems but we weren't sure if they were caused by coexistance of w2k and w2k3. and since the network was screwed up begin with, we couldn't pinpoint what was the core cause of the prbolem.
now that i found out (i didn't know!!!) that we are having USN rollback problems, i'm suspecting that all these problems that we've been having (mainly with DNS service) was initiated when we created this new PDC from the exchange server.
as a newbie, i've learned so much from this project.
1) Exchange server is recommanded to be run on a member server. it can run on a DC as well but do not change the role of the server after Exchange was installed.
2) Keep the number of DC minimal.
3) Research before converting, upgrading the servers.

probably, at this point, we'll need to rebuild exchanger server as a member server to solve the USN rollback issues. unless one of us finds any documentation otherwise....

the project that was supposed to start in early may and finish by the memorial day weekend, it still not finished...
0x802440a WSUS

by selinathe1 In reply to outlook is retrieving dat ...

I set up WSUS on a win 2k3 server with sp1. workstations are on win xp with sp1 or sp2. i created test group in wsus for test deployment with one of each xpsp1 and xpsp2.
most pc's got populated to the server but not all. but the bigger problem that i'm searching for solution is that some PC's don't report thier status to the wsus server. it seems to be random and still can't find the pattern.
so far, i only found solutions in the case we are using proxy settings, which we are not.

when i try to populate the status of one of these pc's, it gives me an error: 0x802440a. i get the same error message when i go to windows updates website.
