Outlook - Lotus Notes = winmail.dat

By dcraig ·
Winmail.dat - Plain Text Not Working
I have a useres in the US using Outlook 2000 (or higher - XP, 2003)on NT based PCs sending attachments to international recipients (same company) using on NT based PCs but have Lotus Notes as an email client. The attachments are being turned into Winmail.dat. I had my domestic users resend the message in plain text, and the recipients are still unable to open the attachments (without using WMDecode). Does anyone know how to resolve this issue? Would zipping be a temporary fix?

What we did to fix winmail.dat issue...

by pkordell In reply to Outlook - Lotus Notes = w ...

We had the same problem - several Lotus Notes recipients were receiving the winmail.dat file instead of the sent attachments. We tried setting the Outlook mail format to plain text which didn't help at all. Finally figured out that even though we were setting messages to plain text, they were being sent in MIME. Apparently Lotus Notes needs them to be sent in plain text/UUEncode. You can change the recipient send options by right clicking on the email address in the message you're about to send and choosing Send Options. Put a check in the box that says "I want to specify the format for messages to this recipient". Make sure MIME is unchecked and that Plain Text/UUEncode is checked at the bottom. Uncheck the BINHEX box (that's for Macintosh files). You can set this as the default send format for the recipient by going into their contact file, right-clicking on the email address and following these same steps. After making these changes we were able to send any attachment to Lotus Notes recipients. Hope this helps!
