Outlook ( not outlook express ) does not open when I click on the icon. It says cannot open outlook and asks if I need to open in safe mode. Even then it does not open and I notice the cpu utilization is 100 percent in task manager and that it is not responding. Any help is appreciated

Please check the size of the outlook data files. Outlook has trouble with data files over a certain size. I think there was a ms bulletin on this issue.

MS says that outlook data files can be up to 4 GB, but if you really look, then you will find an article that states after 100MB, the pst may become corrupt. But to answer your question, go to control panel, mail, show profiles, and remove the .pst files from outlook. Making sure of course that you know where they are located.
Then open outlook, does the error still occur? If not then run scanpst on the pst files and have it fix problems. Scanpst can be found on the office cd.

Followed your suggestion, did not help at all. Any new suggestions? I even installed and uninstalled the whole thing and still Outlook would not start.

Also, if you are using Outlook 2000 or XP, after trying to open Outlook several times, it should allow you to run Detect & Repair. Make sure you run this. This has resolved countless problems for me. Also, are all of your other Office applications starting correctly? If not, go into C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Startup and then remove (or move) any files that in there.

First: I believe it was a 2gb limit, not 4.

Second: If this is the case, you will need to repair the file with the outlook repair tool, then access it normally and archive as much as you can immediately. After archiving, repair the file again to reduce the size. This will reallocate the filespace from the email that wa archived from the .PST file.

Third: If you are running this against his NT account, and the fiel is on an exchange server (IE. Excgahange 5.5) then you may want to check that it is running against his account, and verify it in Mail settings in the control panel.

Otherwise, try MS KB and see if they can help.

      Good Luck!

Try looking for the file called outcmd.dat. Rename to outcmd.old. Restart outlook. Many a times this will resolve. By the way 2 gig is the limit for Outlook 2000 pst. Microsoft has a utility that will bring the size back down to 2 gig if the pst can not be opened. You have to request from Microsoft.

Is Outlook trying to connect to a Exchange Server or an Internet server?
