Outlook slows when old E5.5 srv shutdwn

By Monte Admin ·
I have an issue with Outlook when I shut down the old E5.5 server with a new E5.5 server in place. Outlook clients freeze up and act like they are not responding, however this doesn't happen to all clients. I moved all the mailboxes off a very oldserver in order to replace it. It was the first server in the site and I have followed all of the directions for removing the first server in a site. Is there any other information anyone would mind sharing?

I have done this for several sites before at my previous employeer but not had a problem like this. Any ideas?

Bryan

I'm wondering if the new exchange server is on a different network and maybe you have some bad routing going on.

Go into the Outlook clients server properties and make sure they are pointing at the correct server. If not, you'd have a lot of unecessary traffic going on and taht would certainly slow things down while the client kept searching for the old server.

I'm actually about to decomission an Exchange 5.5 server that I moved mail boxes from. If you could email any info that you have, I would appreciate it. I've never run into problems before doing this but it's been a while.

Thanks, but they are all on the same network. It's as if Outlook keeps information cached from the old server and can't refresh the informaion to the new server. i.e. if a user tries to open another user's calendar, by selecting the calendar from their recently used items, (with the old server off) it will respond "The information store could not be opened" However if the old server is on it will find the calendar, then it will work if the old server is off (on subsequent tries to that calendar). It works to explicitly type in the users calendar name. This is just one example, some users can't even open mail, they can see it but as soon as they click on it Outlook freezes. I'll email you some of the info I have on decomissioning E5.5.

Thanks again,
Bryan

You don't say what version of Outlook you're using, or what workstation operating systems. You might want to check and see if the workstations have a HOSTS or LMHOSTS file that is pointing to the old server. If so, just edit it to point to the new one. Also, as far as connecting to other mailboxes, shortcuts on the Outlook Bar or Favorites list will not work - this is standard behavior - when you move mailboxes from one Exchange server to another you have to create new shortcuts to any foldersor mailboxes that were moved. Occasionally some will work by some quirk but most of them will not. If there's no HOSTS or LMHOSTS file on the workstations that are freezing, try creating one that points to the new server. Also, try deleting the old Outlook profile on the workstation and creating a new one. Hope this helps!

Thanks! Looks like recreating the profiles works.
