Outlook woes on Exchange

I recently created a new Contact folder and Distribution list in Outlook 2003. The next day Microsoft Word and Outlook apparently hung on an open .cov file when trying to fax from Word. IT claims the two are related and necessitated the
re-loading of the entire Office Suite. Can the two
possibly be related?
