Outlook xpress msg storage default

I changed the default storage location of my messages to a folder on an external hard drive. I cannot remember how I did this nor can I import them back in to Outlook Express. When I try I see a message that states that there are no messages to import in this folder. Yet I can see all my various mail folders in it. What to do?
