Outlook98 Synchronization fails

By jcoan ·
I have two laptop users who were just transitioned to new laptops, and can no longer successfully sync their offline folder file with the exchange server.

In both cases, the outlook 98 client on the workstation was setup to connect to the exchange folder, and enabled for offline access. New .ost files were created on the laptops by selecting Tools / Synchronize / All Folders.

Now every time a synchronization occurs (manual or automatic) the following error message is inserted in the synchronization log in the deleted items folder:

11:55:06 Error synchronizing folder
11:55:06 [80004005-501-0-550]
11:55:06 The client operation failed.
11:55:06 Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store

The only other thing that changed around the same time, was that ISINTEG was run on the private information store on the exchange server to (hopefully?) eliminate any anomolies in the database. ISINTEG was run at the request of the support techs at ARCSERV, who are troubleshooting some backup problems on our exchange server.

I have tried reinstalling outlook, creating new profiles, recreating the .ost file from scratch... etc. etc. etc.

HELP!

Outlook98 Synchronization fails

.OST files are stamped with a unique ID for a user's mailbox, and you can only have one .OST per system. Your syncronization on the laptop is failing because the server-based copy of the .OST is searching for the ID stamped onto the workstation copyof the .OST.
You may be able to open the workstation client in online mode using the same profile that was used before for the .OST, disable offline folder use, and then create a new laptop profile for the mailbox with a new .OST enabled, but I'm not certain.
If that doesn't work, you will need to open the workstation client in offline mode using the same profile that was used for the before for the .OST, create a .PST for that profile, copy the information into the .PST. Create a new mailbox for the user on the server, create a profile that connects to the new mailbox, add the .PST to that profile, and move the .PST messages into the mailbox. You should then be able to enable .OST use again, with the new mailbox.
regards, lazarus.

Thanks Anyway, lazarus. It turned out it was a problem on the exchange server. Enabled background virus scanning in an Exchange reg edit, and all now works fine.
