Outside E-mail / Attachments

By BeerMan97 ·
We have users in a remote office that cannot receive e-mail from outside our office. When they receive e-mail from anybody, even within the office, the user receives a message saying that "Outlook could not open one or more attachments." We have aNT network with Office 2000. Windows 2000 and Windows 98 on the network where this is happening. It is happening both operating system platforms. Any ideas on either problem?

What do you Outlook clients get their email from?
I have seen the same problem once on Exchange. The database was corrupt and was not allowing users to get attachments. Actually had to run eseutil to repair the Information Store.
Also if you have Exchange, are you running any type of anti-virus software? Their are issues with Ex5.5 SP3 and anti-virus products using the Exchange AVAPI. If this is the case, you should install SP4 for Exchange and see if there is an update for your anti-virus.
Hope one of these points you in the correct direction.

Thanks Tony for the response. I want to give you and some others some more info about what has happened. Our e-mail server crashed about 3 weeks ago and we got it rebuilt and didn't lose anything. We reinstalled Windows NT 4.0 on the new server and Exchange Server 5.5 with SP 4. This problem has been off and on ever since. Don't know what is going on for sure. All the users get their e-mail from the Exchange server. Hope this helps. We checked all the services that are running and everything seems to look ok.

We also have Norton Anti-Virus Corporate Edition installed that updates our virus definitions every week and does an automatic virus scan off all workstations and servers at noon on Fridays. Any guesses?

Outlook 2000 has a security feature that automatically blocks attachments with certain extensions. You will never be able to open attachments with these extensions in Outlook 2000 to my knowledge.

Here is a list of extensions blocked by Outlook 2000:

.ade
.adp
.bas
.bat
.chm
.cmd
.com
.cpl
.crt
.exe
.hlp
.hta
.inf
.ins
.isp
.js
.jse
.lnk
.mdb
.mde
.msc
.msi
.msp
.mst
.pcd
.pif
.reg
.scr

.shb
.shs
