OWA URL change

By seanevans ·
I have an instance of OWA that uses the URL http://mail.<website>.net/exchange and would like to do two things. A) Have the URL be http://www.<website>.net/exchange and add SSL. https://www.<website>.net/exchange. Right now the OWA is using a dummy website to host the pages on the Exchange server.

Suggestions. Is this an easy fix?

Sean

To be able to access OWA with the different URL, you only need to have a DNS record created for www.<website>.net pointed to the IP address of the OWA server.
To use SSL you will need to purchase a digital certificate (verisign is one CA, but thereare others). Then through the Internet service manager you will need to configure the exchange vertual directory for SSL. Here is a KB article Q234022 that discribes the process.

Couple of things - if you change your URL to the URL of your existing site with a /exchange after you are going to need users to manually type in the /exchange to access OWA. We found it is easier to create a new entry in DNS like outlook.<website>.net so that they don't have to move into subdirectories on their own. It's a user-training thing, they can generally deal with typing something.something.net but something.something.net/something else is often rather confusing.
As far as SSL, you can also create (for free) your own certificate using Certificate Server on an NT 4.0 box. If your users are basically employees they probably won't mind not having a certificate from Verisign and you'll save the $$ and the hassle. It takes about 10 minutes to do on your own box.
Good luck.
