P/C crashes when printing a document

By rolandpena ·
What could be causing my P/C to crash when I try to print a word document off a network printer(H/P 4550 color Printer). It only crashes with this file only, not any other file. The file has some small clip art on it along with text nothing spectaculor. My machine is a win2000pro,w/office2000,700mhz 128mg ram.I tried it on another machine and got the same results,so I don't think it's the machine.Signed Perplexed in San Antonio

in following order:
update the printer driver
update w2k to sp2
update office to sp2

it's mostly the printer driver.

You didn't say how much free space you have on your hard drive for the spooler nor did you mention whether you were printing through a server print spooler. But, in either case, it sounds like something's running out of memory (either disk or ram). Try printing the document at a lower quality (draft), or take out the clip art temporarily and see if this makes a difference.

It's a long shot, but you might also try saving the file as a different name and then try printing the new document (stranger things have worked! and believe it or not this has worked for me before!)

Good luck.

Greetings,

Any of the above suggestions (or some yet to be made), may or not help you in the long term. But I'm assuming you have the latest drivers, enough disk space, and the like.

In the short term, however, to get your document printed just once, try this:

Go to the Printers folder in the Control Panel, go to Details, go to Spool Settings, and try changing one of these two settings:

Select "Print Directly to the Printer" instead of "Spool Print jobs.."

OR

Change the "SpoolData Format" from EMF to RAW.

This might just be a weird quirk with this one document. If it works, you can then change the settings back to what they were.

Regards,

Maxwell

The biggest problem that I see, is 128mb of ram. Win2K box says that it will run on 128mb, but that is bare bones. Add 2000 office and you are maxed out. Add at least another 64, but 128 would definately make an improvement. To see the result, start your system monitor and print the file. I am sure that your will see your system resources peg out. When your resources peg out, the result is a crash.

Paul.

Try printing another document with some graphics. If it prints then there is a problem with that particular document. Run a virus scan on the document. Hope this helps.
