P4 Heatsink Mounting frame

By antuck ·
I need to replace the heatsink mounting frame on a Dell computer. This is the plastic piece that screws to the motherboard and the heat sink sits on top of it. I contacted Dell and they were of no help. I have looked at different site like newegg and do not see the mounting frame. I see a lot of heatsinks but no frames.

It is a P4 mPGA478B chip.

Does anybody know where to get the mounting frame? Or, is there another way to mount a heatsink on a P4 like this?

From what I have seen, it looks like when ordering a heatsink it does not come with the mounting frame. Also I'm not concerned with keeping the cover that comes with the Dells and goes over the current heat sink. As long as the heatsink has a fan on it.

The frame that you are talking about always comes with the M'Board and should be attached to it on delivery.

The P4 Heatsink/Fan then have a plastic piece that clips into this mounting frame with 2 levers to tighten it onto the CPU and also hold the Fan. So your best bet would be to try to find a dead P4 M'Board and take the mounting bracket off that. Failing that you could always contact one of the major M'Board suppliers and try to buy a mounting bracket from them.

Thanks Col, I was afraid I would have to go this route. The problem with the current frame is the tabs that hold the metal clips have broken off. I was hoping maybe a different heatsink might work. But I see it has to have this plastic frame to mount to.
