p4 vs. xeon

I would recommend the AMD XP because of the cost factor, and that they are a faster processor. However, if the money isnt yours... I would go for the Xeon if you need dual processors, but the P4 if you need more speed.

Anyways, I hope that answers your question

We have 20 3D cad HP visualize workstations and i think its minor whether you went with a P4 or a XEON (we have the Xeon)

IF support is an issue i would stick with Intel, otherwise, the other guy is right, the XP are very quick.

Even more important is the Video Card. Make sure to grab yourself a ATI FIreGL4 or a Wildcat card to do your rendering. Trust me, you'll save yourself plenty of time.

A Xeon may be better suited to your needs. Although an Althlon XP or Pentium 4 has enough power, the motherboards for the Xeon are higher end products that would support very powerful graphics cards, onboard SCSI, etc. You may also want to consider the dual Athlon MP CPUs with the Tyan Thunder K7 motherboard- that should be plenty capable for what you are planning.

Just make sure you get a motherboard with an AGP Pro slot if you intend to use an AGP Pro video card.

p4 vs. xeon

Hi,

The difference between the Xeon and P4 is essentially the amount of L1 cache. The Xeon has significantly more and so doesn't go to main memory as often - resulting in overall increased speed.

BUT... I concur with those who said your graphics card is the most important part of your system. It is.

Any high end CPU will do fine as long as you have a very good graphics card. That's where you should spend your money...

Cheers,
Tim.
