Good Morning.. Gonna do my best to answer the question. Most of these times when errors occur (like the ones you are having) they ussually have a “??????? Caused” in front of it. So not know the exact application that cause the error slows it down a little bit. Feel free to email me more details if you would like.

However. the comctl32.dll looks like it’s a dll associated with Microsofts Intellipoint software v2.0 installed and the “smartfocus” options selected. If you are using this hardware/software you might want to look for a new driver/software.

The shlwapi.dll issue only has 1 document associated with it.

      http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q231/8/19.ASP

It seems to suggest that a possible file has been corrupted file name is Hhctrl.ocx and it is suggested that you re-install it.

In any case this is probable the best I could considering the limits of the initial description. Feel freeto email for more he

If the errors are consistent, meaning you receive the same ones everytime then I agree that you should reinstall the OS rather than spend a lot of time guessing which application is causing the problems. A page fault is when a hw driver or service is stepping out of its “bounds”.

I suggest reinstalling the OS on top of your current configuration to salvage most of your settings.

If the errors keep changing you need to look at your memory in the PC. Try diags in your BIOS if available. I have seen this many times.

Another possibility, after checking previous answers, is bad simms. I dealt with this problem a couple of years ago, reinstalled windows several times, finally replaced sims, and all has been well ever since. It seems the memory check at bootup wasnot thorough enough to catch a simms weakness under all conditions.

I would suggest changing your memory. Errors in RAM have been known to cause page faults under certain conditions. Page faults were happening on my system until I replaced the cheaper RAM with some quality ECC RAM. It’s worth a try.

      Hello,
As was said in previous answers a “page fault” is always associated with memory. Whether the program or shortcuts are setup correctly doesn’t matter -as sometimes programs get carried away & try to over write itself or other programs locatedin memory causing this message or hanging up your computer completely. Perhaps it’s a good time to upgrade the amount of memory you have.

As stated before, it appears most of your errors are related to the Intellimouse software. Before doing the almighty reinstall, just go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Microsoft Intellimouse. Then download the lastest version and install it. I believe it is 2.2d.

All Good previous answers, here is a good rule of thumb for resolving these types of issues. Assuming you have done the basic Tech thing of scandisk (i.e. I hate this program, use something better), checked Fans, and checked basic Bios settings like overclocked CPU’s. (comonly over-looked issues that cause lots of problems)

If errors appear to be completely random, i.e. doing the same procedure doesn’t seem to produce the same error, or even error out at all. Errors don’t point to the same files all the time, or varried types of errors including lock-ups, Fatal exceptions, or page faults. If any of the following apply I would bet good money on Ram, or Cache (cache only in older systems). Pull out mismatched pairs of ram, or if possible completly change ram and re-test. (in 5 years of Tech support for retail computer stores I have never found a good Ram diagnostic tool, just swap it and retest)

If errors are predictable, always doing the same thing at the same time, first re-install the program

that fails. If no help re-install supporting software (Major drivers used, DirectX, ect.) Still no help, completely remove that program reboot and re-install. If it still fails problem may be OS related, and installing OS over the top rarely fixes the problem.

Before proceding to my next option swap all feasible hardware (1 at a time). Remove periphrials not required to reproduce problem. i.e. NIC’s and sound cards. Swap Ram, pull burst cache chips (do not disable BIOS cache it slows system down and dosn’t prove anything) Swap CPU (a CPU that over heated does really weird things), change Cables (IDE, Floppy, SCSI) and so on. I don’t recomed going all the way to Motherboard just cause labor and expense is too high.

If none of that fixes problem do this.

(I know customers hate this solutions but I find fewer have problems with it that expected.) Kill that MBR. An extremely handy tech tool killmbr.com (I can e-mail it if you can’t find it) will completely wipe HD, MBR,Partitions, OS and a

all. No software problem will stick around after this. If problem is still there you can continue beating your head against a wall, but I recomend sell that customer a new computer, they will get a far better system at a better price, and they will be happier that going without their system for 2 months while you track down that bad trace in the MLB.

Hope this helps anyone. It has been tried and proved through many years of tech work (I am so glad I have moved out of retail work 🙂

Unfortunately, just about anything can cause these error. The files you mention are all Windows system files and are used by almost all Windows software (in fact Kernel32.dll is used by all 32 bit progs) The fact that they all have problems probablyindicates a common problem like a poorly written program accessing memory it shouldn’t. Try this: Check fo viruses. If it persists, remove programs one by one. Then reinstall Windows. If it’s still there, take it to a pro.

      Hope this helps.
