Page Numbering using Referenced Document

Hello everyone,
For my daily work I create and manage Word documents. I'm currently in the process of creating a document that contains the Table of Contents that includes the page numbering of several other documents.

When using standard page numbering in those documents it works fine. The TOC updates with the numbering of each document. I would like to use a section number in my page numbering so I go to Page Number > Page Number Format and check Include chapter number. Then select Heading 1 and click OK. The page numbering updates nicely in the document and uses this format: 1 - 1, 1 - 2, etc. This is so the TOC document displays the sections and their numbers properly.

However, when I open my TOC document and update that the page numbering stops working as expected.

The page numbers all says the same: 1 - 1. Regardless if which pages a heading is actually on.

Does anyone have a clue as to why I can't get the pagenumbering to work properly when I use Referenced Documents?
